Abbreviations and Acronyms

Spell out acronyms at first mention unless they’re well known in your content area, e.g. JPEG, AE, MIDI, HTML, SDK, PHP etc. Unless the acronym is widely known, spell it out in full.

The first time you use an abbreviation or acronym, explain it in full on each page, and then refer to it by initials. For example – Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Don’t use an acronym if you’re not going to use it again later in the text.

Don’t use full stops (periods) in abbreviations – MIDI, not M.I.D.I.

When pluralizing abbreviations and acronyms, use a lowercase “s” and do not insert an apostrophe. For instance:

  • Download the JPEGs (not JPEG’s)
  • Locate your backup DVDs (not DVD’s)
