An ellipsis (plural: ellipses) is a series of three dots: ... There are two different ways to use ellipses on Tuts+.

In a Quote

Ellipses can be used in a quote to indicate the removal of unnecessary information. Do this by adding square brackets around the ellipsis, with a space either side. Here are some examples:

  • "I studied electronic engineering and then computer science [...] which has proven quite useful."
  • Apple issued the following statement today: "The Mac Pro will begin shipping shortly [...] to the earliest pre-order customers."

As a Pause

An ellipsis can be used to indicate a pause in the flow of a sentence. This is the more casual, informal way to use ellipses, so it should be used very rarely in tutorial content. There should be no space before the ellipsis, and one space after.

  • This made me wonder... was I going mad?
  • The page will load slowly... very slowly.
